RÜGEN FLICKS (2)

In april 2024 bezochten mijn vrouw en ik het eiland Rügen voor de vijfde keer. Voor sommige mensen zou dat misschien vier keer te veel zijn. Maar wij hebben het gevoel dat zelfs tien bezoeken aan dit Oostzee-eiland niet genoeg zouden zijn.

Wat is het toch dat een mens zich aangetrokken voelt tot een bepaald gebied, en in dat gebied tot bepaalde plekken? Waarom voel je je daar als het ware thuis? Die vraag stel ik mezelf ook in een van de films:  “What’s the magic of any place?”

In de Rügen Flicks filmserie is er geen eenduidig antwoord op de vraag. Het zou alle spanning omtrent dit thema wegnemen, en bovendien is zo'n antwoord mijns inziens ook niet mogelijk. Ieder mens heeft zo zijn eigen ‘magische’ plek op deze aardbol, vaak meerdere plekken, maar dat in woord en beeld vatten is bepaald niet eenvoudig.

Die vraag wordt in het Engels gesteld. De teksten die ik aan de Rügen Flicks films heb toegevoegd zijn alle in het Engels. Ik heb bewust voor deze taal gekozen en ik zal proberen aan te geven waarom ik deze keuze heb gemaakt.

Deels komt dit door mijn verleden als anglist en leraar Engels in het middelbaar onderwijs. Beroepshalve vond ik het altijd boeiend mij met verschillende aspecten van het Engels bezig te houden, en nu als amateurfilmer merk ik dat de fascinatie voor die taal nooit is verdwenen. Bovendien heb ik altijd graag geschreven, voornamelijk in mijn moedertaal, maar bij vlagen ook in de taal waarin ik les heb gegeven.

Dan is er het feit dat mijn videokanaal FilmFabriekGroningen minstens zo vaak door mensen van buiten Nederland wordt bezocht als door Nederlanders, en dat maakt dat ik geneigd ben ook het Engels als voertaal in mijn filmwerk toe te passen.

Voor de vijfde keer een film maken over het eiland Rügen bracht met zich mee dat het een tikkeltje anders moest dan wat ik tot nu toe had gemaakt. Het idee ontstond om poëtische teksten te schrijven om de gevoelens en indrukken weer te geven die passen bij het filmmateriaal dat ik had geschoten. De combinatie beeld en tekst heeft me altijd aangetrokken. De shots van Rügen die ik in april mee naar Groningen nam lieten zich in bepaalde thema’s indelen en op die thematische benadering schreef ik mijn Engelstalige teksten.

RÜGEN FLICKS (2)

In April 2024 my wife and I visited the island of  Rügen for the fifth time. For some people this might be four times too many. We, however, feel that even ten visits to this Baltic island would not be enough.

What is it that gets people to go back to a certain area time and again, and why are certain places in that area so highly attractive to them? What is it that makes you feel at home there? I ask myself that question in one of the films: “What’s the magic of any place?”

In the Rügen Flicks filmseries this question remains unanswered. Had an answer been possible, any excitement or curiosity regarding this theme would have been killed straight away. Each of us sports a ‘magical’ place of their own on this planet, and often more than one, but to express the magic one feels and undergoes in text and imagery is not an easy task.

I ask the question in English. The lyrics that come with the Rügen Flicks films are all in English. I have deliberately decided to express myself in this language for this film project, and I will try to explain why I made this choice.

Partly the choice lies in my past of reading English at Groningen University and in my long career as a teacher of English at several secondary schools. Professionally, I had always been intrigued by the various aspects of the English language, and now as an amateur filmmaker I find that this fascination has never left me. Moreover, I have always been fond of writing as a form of self-expression, mostly in my mother tongue Dutch, but at times I love to write in the language I used to teach.

Then there is the fact that my YouTube channel is visited by as many people from abroad as by people in the Netherlands, which is why I decided to use English (beside Dutch) in my video projects.

Making a film project about Rügen for the fifth time meant I had to set about things a bit differently from what I had done in the past. The idea arose to write lyrics to describe the feelings and impressions fitting the footage I had shot. Combining footage and words has always fascinated me. The Rügen shots I took home with me to Groningen in April were thematically arranged and I sat down to write my English lyrics to that thematic approach.

RÜGEN FLICKS is de titel van ons nieuwe videoproject. Het is de bedoeling in het najaar van 2024 DEEL 1 uit te brengen. Bijzonder aan deze reeks over het eiland Rügen is de poëtische benadering van de diverse onderwerpen die we over dit Oostzee eiland laten zien. RÜGEN FLICKS is the title of our new video project. In the autumn of 2024 we mean to bring out PART 1. What makes this Rügen project so remarkable is the poetic approach to the various topics relating to this Baltic Sea island. Further details are provided by FFG PROJECT INFO on our website.
