LANDSCHAPPEN

LANDSCAPES
Dutch landscapes are well-filled with ever-growing industrial areas that help big cities grow bigger while road systems are rapidly expanding to serve both the industries and cities. It may come as a surprise to the reader that this overcrowded and wet little country still boasts some wonderful, empty spaces.
Overfull landscapes are found outside the Netherlands as well. In Lower Saxony, for example, which is not as thickly populated as the Netherlands, you may wander across endless, empty, and desolate moors to run into the immense Meyer shipyards at Papenburg.
And having mentioned the Meyer shipyards, I must briefly touch upon the Friesenbrücke, for it is thanks to a ship coming from that renowned shipyard that the old railway bridge got irreparably damaged.
Which is why VIP’s had to start thinking about how to build a new bridge. Which is why the old bridge had to be demolished, which is why one day passers-by suddenly found themselves staring at a riverscape near Weener that so sadly lacked the good, fifty-year-old railway bridge. Something that had always been there, had gone for good, and that sensation must have left a deep and lasting impression on many people living in the Weener region as well as on many outsiders.
The loss of a long-used railway bridge certainly got to me. The fact the old bridge house was still standing, emphasized this. My short poem The Empty Site tries to express how I felt.
Meanwhile the new Friesenbrücke is coming along nicely. I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderful swing- and lift bridge, one that will suit the slow Ostfriesland landscape, and one that facilitates train travel from Groningen to Leer and beyond. I’m looking forward to the day.
